One hears of numerous expert opinions on why babies do not require pillows and how dangerous pillows can be for the health of your baby. Well, most of these judgments overstate the dangers and do not correctly portray the need for baby pillows. It is true that very young babies, less than one year of age do not require a pillow under normal circumstances, and that some baby pillow products may actually be unsafe. However, past that age, using a baby pillow is no more harmful and can actually aid your baby in sleeping better.

During the early years, the skull bones are very soft and keeping the head in one position may result in the skull developing a lopsided appearance. Sleeping on the back can lead to formation of a depression on the back of the head. Using a baby pillow can help prevent this and provides the requisite support to the head of your baby. Choosing the right kind of pillow is vital. Never choose a feather or soft pillow as the baby may develop allergies due to the feather or be smothered due to the extra softness enveloping the nose and mouth. The new memory foam pillows are a good buys because they provide the right kind of hold to the baby’s head and are non hazardous.

There are different kinds of baby pillows available in the market. The key is to identify which sort of pillow is best for your baby. Baby pillows used in cribs are just as safe as any other provided they are thin and narrow. The proof of this statement lies in the fact that all hospitals use crib pillows in their childcare units. Doctors also recommend baby pillows when your baby develops a cold. A baby pillow helps keep the head up and aids breathing which is disturbed by a congested nose. It is also believed that using a baby pillow helps prevent baby ear infections and acid reflux. Some parents advise that the right time to give your baby a pillow is when the baby graduates from the crib to a bed. This advice is on the basis that smothering is unlikely as the pillow will probably fall off the bed. Some babies even start exhibit signs that they need a pillow. The signal comes in the form of the baby using a stuffed toy or a towel as a headrest on its own. Such a gesture is your baby’s way of telling you to do just that; buy a good baby pillow.

Baby Pillows May Suffocate your baby to death

That baby pillows may cause harm to their child is something parents have heard before. But many simply refuse to believe that baby pillows are harmful. Thus many children are still being victimized by something that is so innocent looking as baby pillows. What parents should know is that, the main cause of fatalities under that age is SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Suffocation, strangulation and rebreathing in children go hand in hand with SIDS. The baby pillow plays an important role in most of these cases.

Strangulation and suffocation in children under the age of one is caused by soft bedding, baby pillow or when the baby sleeps on his stomach. One fact is that the baby pillow is as harmful as sleeping on their stomach and soft beddings. The baby pillow is one of the major causes of suffocation in younger children. This is because the baby pillow may be grasped by the baby and it may end up on his face. If the baby fails to remove the pillow from his face, he may get suffocated. In most cases, the baby suffocate when the pillow get too close to the baby.

Another leading cause of SIDS is rebreathing. Rebreathing is when the baby breathes carbon dioxide or what is more commonly known as bad air. Rebreathing happens when the baby, instead of breathing oxygen, inhales the carbon dioxide he has exhaled. Rebreathing may be caused by loose sheets or beddings getting over his head. Many do not realize that rebreathing may also be caused by baby pillow. This may occur if the baby pillow gets too close to the face of the baby and the baby re breathes the carbon dioxide he has exhaled. So even if parents secure the beddings and sheet, if the baby pillow is not removed, the baby is still not safe from rebreathing.

To reduce the risk of SIDS doctors recommend to parents not to use baby pillows until the baby is out of his crib and is already on toddler bed. This means that the baby is not ready to use pillows until he is on his toddler age. The baby do not need pillows to sleep comfortably so this is not really a problem. Babies and even adults do not need pillows to get a good and comfortable sleep according to medical sleep experts. However, if you really want to introduce your baby to pillows, do so only when he is old enough and sleeping on his toddler bed. This is because you just might introduce him to harm instead of additional comfort.
