The general perception about baby sleep pillows is that it is not required for a child under 2 years of age. Children below that age may even suffocate while using an inappropriately designed baby pillow. If, from your experience, you feel it is the right time to introduce a baby sleep pillow, it is a good idea to do so once your toddler moves from a crib to a bed. It is around this time that your child begins to support himself on his feet, a pillow may aid in climbing or crawling out of the crib! If you still wish to introduce a baby sleep pillow even while you are using a crib, go for one that is small and firm.

If you are offering a pillow to your child for the first time, pick baby sleep pillows made for the purpose; do not use a spare adult pillow.

They also opine that pillow support prevents cranial deformities which can occur if the baby sleeps with head to one side for a long duration. One thing to check is the pillow cover. Choose cotton rich linen as the pillow cover material. Such a material helps prevent allergic reactions or rashes, a common occurrence if using synthetic pillow covers. Soft pillows or feather filled pillows are a definite miss, the real culprit for all that negative publicity.

A baby pillow, like what you get on an airline flight, is the right size to introduce to a first time pillow user. It is recommended that you avoid down and feathers at first, to minimize allergic irritation and because those type of pillows are often too fluffy and big for a child. We followed these guidelines when introducing a baby pillow to our almost 3 year old daughter recently when we moved her to a big bed. We would always find her hugging the baby pillow, instead of actually having her head on it. It was not much of pillow, so it would frequently get lodged between the wall and the bed or disappear in the blankets.

This is best so that the child does not get too hot, or suffocate from the bulk of a normal sized pillow. Another guideline is that the pillow should be free of decoration such as fringe or beads. This is so that the baby cannot choke on anything. Cotton and silk pillows are two perfect examples of baby friendly fabrics. Feather pillows are best to stay away from, as they can cause an allergic reaction in the child.
