But just as babies are not like adults, baby pillows are not like adult pillows. How can you know you have selected the right kind of pillow for your child?

First, is a baby pillow a good idea for a baby your child’s age? Pillows should never be put in the crib with babies under the age of two. Because infants’ neck muscles are weak, they run the risk of suffocating on the pillow if they roll onto their belly. Some parents find that elevating their baby’s head when their baby has a stuffed nose or an ear infection helps the baby to sleep, but this is dangerous. If a baby under the age of two needs his or her head elevated, put the pillow under the mattress, not in the crib, so that the mattress is elevated.

The parents might think that the baby pillow will provide the kids with additional comfort when they sleep but in reality, the baby is fine without the pillow. Nevertheless, for parents who really want to introduce their baby to pillow, these experts recommend staying away from the soft feather pillows. Since these are too soft, the child’s head my sink into them and it will smother the child. Aside from that, they may also set off allergies.

Experts also recommend soft and small size pillow, similar to airline pillow, to those parents who insist on introducing pillow to their children even if they are still in the crib.

Some experts say that even giving a child over the age of 2 a pillow may not make them any more comfortable than they would be without one. All experts agree, however, that you should wait to give your child a pillow until he is out of the crib.

A baby pillow, like what you get on an airline flight, is the right size to introduce to a first time pillow user. Choose a pillow that is not feather or down, as such a pillow can often allow the head of a child to sink down too much. We recently introduced our a daughter (she is 2 and a half) to a bed and moved her out of her crib.

Also selecting machine washable pillows is a good idea. Again, avoid extraneous fittings on baby pillows; these compromise looks for the sake of safety. Additional ribbons and laces on baby pillows are unnecessary and may increase the chances of suffocation.

Finally, while the chief benefit of using good quality baby pillows is certainly a night of unruffled shut eye, the advantages do not end there. Used the right way, baby pillows reduce the chances of your child developing flat head syndrome or Plagiocephaly.

This is why you may also want to use a sleep positioner in addition to a baby pillow. Sleep positioners are designed to keep babies sleeping on their back in the safest possible position. Along with the baby pillow, these sleep positioners help ensure that the baby is able to get a good night’s rest.

Some doctors and sleep experts feel that a baby pillow is not really essential for babies. While some children seem to do fine without them, many will need a baby pillow in order to sleep more comfortably through the night.
