Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Are you looking for a good idea to give a toddler a gift they will love and even grow attached too? How about giving a toddler a baby pillow for a great gift idea? Baby pillows can become a source of comfort and attachement for some babies.

Baby pillows are not to be kept in a crib or given to young infants under 1 years old. Baby pillows are not recommended by doctors for infants or to be put into their cribs. Putting a pillow of any type into a crib with an infant can be dangerous.

Baby pillows can be used by your baby for sleeping or taking a nap They love to take them in the car with them to go traveling. Keeping baby safe at night is a benefit as well and make children feel secure.

Mothers are becoming more and more aware of how using baby pillows can be used to help comfort their baby. Because of the skull is so soft , a baby can develop an uneven head shape if left too long in one position. A baby pillow can help to prevent that from happening. Mothers should be very careful in choosing just the right kind of baby pillow their child will be using.

Some good advice for a new mother is that she should never chose a Down feathered baby pillow. This is because sometimes the baby can become more susceptible to developing allergies when exposed to feathers at so early an age. Babies have actually suffocated when too soft a pillow is used.

The best baby pillows are those made out of memory foam products. There is no danger of suffocation when a good supportive baby pillow is used.

Manufacturers have made many different types of pillows for the consumer today. It is best to shop around and find the best type for your baby. Crib pillows should be very thin and not too wide. Doctors do suggest that a baby pillow be used if your toddler has a cold or is congested. Again, these baby pillows are not to be used for children under the age of 12 months. Baby pillows have been noted to help relieve suffering from earaches.

One tip to keep in mind when looking to buy a baby pillow is to get one that has colorful colors and fun prints. They are available in lots of colors and shapes. Years later the baby pillow will still be a beloved gift and loved by the child.

You can even get the name and birth date put on the pillow. Long after the child is grown, the pillow will remain a keepsake. Baby pillows are just great gifts for toddlers.

About The Baby Pillow And Playing It Safe

Many baby pillows with various types of design and decoration are available at stores and craft shows. Parents, or their family or friends, may be tempted to buy a baby pillow as a personalized gift for a new baby. But is a baby pillow safe for your baby? If you receive a baby pillow as a gift or purchase one for your child, there are some chilling facts you must know before you place the pillow in the crib with your baby.

SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the leading cause of death in the United States for infants one month to one year of age. In 1992 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that babies be placed in a non prone position to sleep, as a result of findings in other countries. In 1994, the Back To Sleep campaign was initiated as a joint effort by several national agencies and consumer groups. Following this, various studies and surveys were conducted to evaluate the relevance of this change on the occurrence of SIDS. These studies showed the rate of SIDS decreased by 50%, but other related factors were also discovered. In 2005, an AAP task force released a new statement, which included several recommendations. Foremost, babies must be laid to sleep on the back only, not on the side. The statement also recommended that the only items to put in the crib with the baby should be a firm mattress and fitted sheet. If a bumper pad is used it must not be a loose, fluffy type. No baby pillow or toys or other objects should be included. In response to increased incidence of flat head syndrome, alternate methods of prevention were advised. Positioning other than on the back or use of a baby pillow were not deemed worth the risk of SIDS by the AAP.

There is a baby pillow on the market, called Baby Sleep Positioner, which includes the recommendations for SIDS prevention in its advertising. The baby pillow sleep positioner is made of memory foam and keeps the infant in the recommended position, while cushioning the back of the head. The statement released by the AAP is clear that it does not endorse any specific commercial products. Prior to using the baby pillow sleep positioner, parents should first seek the advice of their Pediatrician to be safe.

Baby Pillows: Some Must Knows

The Internet is full of horrific stories of how babies have suffocated to death because of using baby pillows.Hogwash! I would say. My personal experience in using baby pillows for my daughter from the age of one and half is a good example that it is not such a devilish product as it is made out to be. Indeed, some common sense precautions are a must. Firstly, never go in for cheap products, they are most likely to compromise on quality to keep their prices down. I scoured WalMart, Woolworth and specialized baby product stores before deciding on which type of baby pillow to buy. Online research is particularly useful as you can reduce the actual ‘legwork’. A nice narrow, firm baby pillow is just as good as the latest memory foam pillows. In my opinion, a memory foam pillow though a bit costly is a better buy. As the name suggests, the memory foam pillow molds to the contours of the baby’s head and thus provides a very good support. It was worth the buy because ever since my baby started sleeping on the baby pillow I have not seen her vomit her nightly feed and she sleeps oh so soundly like an angel.

There are other advantages to using a baby pillow. Doctors say that a slightly elevated head position is helpful in breathing especially if the baby has a cold. They also say that a firm support prevents cranial deformity which may occur if the baby sleeps with head to one side for too long. One thing to check is the pillow cover. Choose cotton rich linen as the pillow cover material. Such a material helps prevent allergic reactions or rashes, a common occurrence if using synthetic pillow covers. Don’t buy soft or feather pillows, they are the ones responsible for the negative publicity. I would recommend that with these common sense tips, using baby pillows is not a liability but an advantage for every parent and the baby of course.
