This is because the pillow only increases the risk of your baby suffocating from it if he happen to have his face end up on it.

So when is it safe for the baby to use pillow? Well, doctors recommend that you should not have your baby use pillow unless he is already out on the crib and is already sleeping on his toddler bed. In other words, the baby should at least be two years old. If you really want to, that is. There is really no need for them, even for toddlers, to use pillows yet.

The firm surface of the mattress will reduce the risk of suffocation and keep your child safe.

Second, does your baby require a baby pillow? Because toddlers and babies are proportioned differently from adults, they often sleep perfectly well without a pillow. You will know your child is ready for a pillow when they sleep restlessly or when they start balling blankets or stuffed toys under their head.

Third, what size should a baby pillow be? When you choose a pillow for your child, pick one that is small and flat, about the size and shape of an airline pillow. A too high pillow will cause your child to wake with a sore neck, but a small pillow will stop this from happening.

Rebreathing may be caused by loose sheets or beddings getting over his head. What many do not know is that baby pillows may also cause rebreathing. This can happen if the baby inhales his exhaled carbon dioxide because the pillow is too close to his face. So even if parents secure the beddings and sheet, if the baby pillow is not removed, the baby is still not safe from rebreathing.

To reduce the risk of SIDS doctors recommend to parents not to use baby pillows until the baby is out of his crib and is already on toddler bed.

But many simply refuse to believe that baby pillows are harmful. Thus many children are still being victimized by something that is so innocent looking as baby pillows. What parents should know is that, the main cause of fatalities under that age is SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Suffocation, strangulation and rebreathing in children go hand in hand with SIDS. The baby pillow plays an important role in most of these cases.

Doctors recommend introducing a pillow to a toddler at around two years of age. Toddlers can become attached to their pillows. Toddlers may find pillows give them a sense of security when they hug the soft, springy material to their body.

Using a pillow before the age of two can be dangerous. Using a pillow with a baby increases the risk of suffocation.

However, if the child is past their second birthday, then a sleeping pillow is a safe gift for them.

You can find decorative pillows in just about any color, shape, and material to match any bedroom. If buying a pillow off the shelf does not appeal to you, you can also personalize a baby pillow. For instance, have a pillow embroidered with a poem that is meaningful to the parents, or that expresses your hopes for the child. Or have the pillow printed with a photo of a beloved pet.

This is why you may also want to use a sleep positioner in addition to a baby pillow. Sleep positioners are designed to keep babies sleeping on their back in the safest possible position. Along with the baby pillow, these sleep positioners help ensure that the baby is able to get a good night's rest.

Some doctors and sleep experts feel that a baby pillow is not really essential for babies. While some children seem to do fine without them, many will need a baby pillow in order to sleep more comfortably through the night.
